  20. As the network has grown, along with it there has been an increase in
  21. the number of software tools and applications to navigate the network
  22. and make use of the many, varied resources which are part of the
  23. network.  Within the past year and a half we have seen a wide spread
  24. adoption of tools such as the ARCHIE servers, the Wide Area Information
  25. Servers (WAIS), the Internet Gopher, and the WorldWide Web (WWW).  In
  26. addition to the acceptance of these tools there are also diverse
  27. efforts to enhance and customize these tools to meet the needs of
  28. particular network communities.
  29.  
  30. There are many organizations and associations that have recently begun
  31. to focus on the proliferating resources and tools for networked
  32. information retrieval (NIR).  The Networked Information Retrieval Group
  33. will be a cooperative effort of three major players in the field of
  34. NIR: IETF, RARE, and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI)
  35. specifically tasked to collect and disseminate information about the
  36. tools and to discuss and encourage cooperative development of current
  37. and future tools.

  39. The NIR Working Group intends to increase the useful base of
  40. information about networked information retrieval (NIR) tools, their
  41. developers, interested organizations, and other activities that relate
  42. to the production, dissemination, and support of NIR tools, to produce
  43. documentation that will enable user services organizations to provide
  44. better support for NIRtools, to develop materials that will assist the
  45. support and training of end users and to evolve in the future as
  46. necessary to meet and anticipate changes in the field (i.e., NIR
  47. tools, protocols, network topology, etc.)
